Marriage Equality

Well it’s a hot topic. Especially in New Zealand as we wake today, having celebrated last nights marriage equality bill being passed.

For me, It’s simple…. and not a matter of politics, or religion…  Although in the structure our world currently lives in – Politics and legislation – The State determines our fate through laws and regulations on what we can and cannot do. What’s simple to me is that we are ALL human, therefore deserve the same rights. We do not deserve to be divided and discriminated against because of our minor differences in lifestyle, choice, and ‘unconventional’ sexual orientations or gender identity. And New Zealand took a step closer to equality for ALL last night.

Today New Zealand can celebrate marriage equality. The ability for any two persons in this country, regardless of Gender or sexual identity to legally marry, entitled to the same rights that heterosexual couples have savored alone, prior to today.

For now, it means that my partner and I have the choice and human right to marry if we choose to do so. It means that my transgender friends can marry too! and if one of them transitions so that their relationship technically turns into a same sex one they no longer need to get divorced because it’s against the law for same sex couples to be ‘married’. Our existence as queer folk will not be denied.

It means that we have a greater chance of being recognized as viable parents. It means we can continue to have our society support same sex couples to adopt children who need warm, healthy, homes that are full of equality, Love and encouragement to not be afraid to be who you want to be. It most importantly means, that same sex couples who adopt children can BOTH legally be on the child’s birth certificate – giving both parents full rights and responsibilities… not blurred lines that no one understands in the face of adversity and discrimination.

I feel the joy of those who have poured their entire souls into having this bill passed.

I feel overwhelmed with my own emotions, and proud to be a kiwi. Seeing our world and country change in hours, minutes, days… months… — Slowly but surely we can keep chipping away at the issues we want addressed and transformed. It is through our determination to see a more fair and just world that we continue to excel at influencing those who write our legislation and law.

Empowering and electing those who we know WILL create change, and take on board the voices and perspectives of the ‘people’.

Here’s to more positive change for our world, our country, our society, our communities, our families, our friends, our brothers and sisters who are tied to us unconditionally through the interconnectedness that is — Earth and Humanity.
